Data Cleansing

Data preparation is a large part of the data mining process. Cleaning the data is the process of removing obviously incorrect data. For example, if the data was miss-keyed and phone number was entered into the person's last name the record is not valid. Berry and Linoff (2000) wrote, "Many fields in data are collection-and nobody ever looks at them. Data mining tries to use these fields, and discovers missing and dirty data." (p. 177).
